How we rated these wood chippers
Every chipper is sold on one number: its rated capacity, the thickest branch the maker says it will take. That number is the ceiling for straight, fresh wood. Crooked limbs, forks and dry hardwood feed slower and jam sooner, so size the machine to the thickest limb you actually cut, with room to spare, not to the average.
StumpDeck has not run these machines. The picks rest on the makers' own specification pages and manuals, read on 24 October 2026, and on one question per class: does it take the wood that job produces, with the power you have on site? Retail prices change often, so they are left to the makers' pages linked under Sources.
Best electric wood chipper and chipper shredder: Sun Joe CJ603E
The CJ603E is a 15-amp, 120-volt chipper shredder: plug it into an outdoor outlet and feed it by hand. Its manual rates it for a cutting diameter of 1.73 in with a 21:1 reduction ratio, on 7 in wheels, at 38.6 lb. That is a hedge and rose-bed machine. It turns a season of small prunings into mulch without an engine to winterise.
Two limits matter. The extension cord sets your reach, so read the manual's extension-cord rules before you buy one. And the manual lists a 94 dB rating, so hearing protection is not optional just because there is no engine.
Best wood chipper for home use: Champion 3-in. chipper shredder
Champion's 100472 is the class most yards actually need. A 224cc engine drives two hardened-steel chipper blades rated for branches up to 3 in, and a separate shredder chute takes leaves and shrubbery up to ½ in. It is gravity-fed, bags into a 2-bushel collection bag and rolls on 12 in never-flat wheels at 114 lb.
That 3-inch rating covers almost everything a homeowner prunes from the ground and most of what a storm drops in a garden. It is not towable, so on a large lot you wheel it to the pile, which is the right way round anyway: staging brush is the slow part of the job.

Best PTO and 3-point hitch wood chipper for a small farm: Wallenstein BX36R
A 3-point hitch wood chipper borrows the tractor's engine. The BX36R runs off the PTO at 540–1000 rpm for tractors of 15–40 hp, mounts on a Cat I hitch (iMatch and quick-hitch compatible) and is rated for 3.5 in wood through a 4 × 9 in infeed. Its 25 in disc carries four knives.
The feed is the detail to look at on any PTO chipper. Here two hydraulic rollers pull the brush in at a speed you set, rather than leaving you to push it. They run off the tractor's hydraulics and need 3–6 gpm of flow, so check your tractor's spec before you order. At 635 lb it is a tractor implement, not something you move by hand.
Best 6-inch wood chipper, the heavy duty class crews tow: Vermeer BC700XL
Past about 4 inches you are into the machines tree crews use. The BC700XL is one of the smallest: a 25 hp Kohler engine, 6 in material capacity through a 6 × 8 in infeed, a 10 in hydraulic feed roller and a 23.9 in disc. It weighs 1,800 lb and tows on a 2 in ball.
Few homeowners should buy one. If your pile is mostly thicker than 3 inches, rent this class for a day or have a crew bring it: the numbers are in wood chipper rental vs hiring a crew, and the chipper productivity calculator shows how long a pile takes at each size.
Which wood chipper class fits your pile
Measure the thickest limbs in a typical pile with a tape before you choose. Then read across:
| Your pile | Power on site | Class to look at | Example here |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hedge and shrub trimmings, small prunings | An outdoor outlet | Electric chipper shredder | Sun Joe CJ603E |
| Prunings and storm limbs up to 3 in | None needed | Gas chipper shredder | Champion 3-in. |
| Fence lines and brush on acreage | Tractor, 15–40 hp, Cat I hitch | 3-point hitch PTO chipper | Wallenstein BX36R |
| Limbs from 4 to 6 in, a removal | Tow vehicle | 6-inch towable (rent or hire) | Vermeer BC700XL |

Before you buy a wood chipper: five checks
Sound
- Compare the rated capacity with the thickest limb you cut, and leave a margin.
- Check the feed: by hand, by gravity, or pulled in by hydraulic rollers.
- Match the power: outlet and cord, a gas engine, or your tractor's PTO hp and hydraulic flow.
- Check how it gets to the pile: wheels, a 3-point hitch or a tow ball, and its weight.
- Read the operator's manual's safety section before the first start, not after.
A chipper produces more volume than people expect, and the pile ends up where the chute points. Size it with the mulch and wood chip calculator before you start, and buck anything over the rating into rounds for the cord calculator. Eye, ear and hand protection is covered in chainsaw safety and PPE.
