Tree height, three field methods

Height decides whether a tree reaches the house, whether a crane is needed, and how many sections a removal becomes. All three methods below need nothing but a phone and level ground, and all three are honest about being estimates.

Sound

Stand at least as far from the trunk as the tree is tall. Standing too close makes the angle steep, and a steep angle turns small reading errors into large height errors.

The stick method, in words

Hold a straight stick vertically at arm's length, with the length of stick above your hand equal to the distance from your hand to your eye. Walk backwards until the top of the stick lines up with the treetop and your hand lines up with the base. Where you are standing, your distance from the trunk equals the height of the tree.

It is a similar-triangles trick with no instrument, it works in a suburban front garden, and it is accurate enough to tell you whether you are looking at a forty-foot tree or a seventy-foot one.

What height is actually used for

Three things. It is one of the two inputs to a removal price alongside DBH, so it goes straight into the removal calculator. It decides whether a lift can reach or a crane pick is needed. And it is the number people use to ask whether the tree can reach the house.

Drop zone

That last use is the dangerous one. A tree does not have to be as tall as the distance to your house to hit it — root plate failure moves the whole stem, and limbs extend well beyond the trunk. Do not clear a tree as "safe" on the strength of a stick and a pace count.
